George Mallory (1886-1924)
He was an English mountaineer, who made three attempts to climb to the top of Mount Everest. On his third attempt, he never made it back down. He died at age 37 somewhere on the mountain either on June 8th or 9th of 1924. His sun-bleached, mummified body wasn’t discovered until 1999 when an expedition retraced his steps and found his body 300 m below a ridge. They assume Mallory reached the top of the mountain and was making his way back down. A golf-ball sized puncture wound in his head leads many to believe that his ice-axe may have been the cause of his fall and subsequent death.
